Recommended: The night before, combine cereal with cold water in a large pot or container. Cover and let soak overnight. This will reduce the morning cooking time.
Day-of: Bring the soaked cereal and water to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring frequently, until the cereal is tender and the porridge has thickened.
If preparing without soaking, mix milk powder with water and bring to a boil. Stir in the cereal, reduce heat to low, and simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring frequently.
During the last 10 minutes of cooking, stir in dried fruit, cinnamon, and brown sugar.
Serve warm.
